How I Make Money Online

A lot of my friends and family are always asking how I can stay at home, and how I actually make money. The truth is, there are several ways I make money. One of the fastest and easiest ways that I have found is making money by selling other people's products, and then earning a commission. In the internet world, this is referred to as affiliate marketing. I purchased a program called Google Cash 3rd Edition. Although I had used Google Adwords in the past, I would end up coming out about even, spending as much as I was making. Once I read Google Cash, however, I discovered ways to make my campaigns profitable quickly. The only challenge I've had with Google Cash is that I spend a lot of time managing my campaigns, tracking competitors, etc. Chris Carpenter, the author of Google Cash, just released a special report where he's actually created software that automates much of the process. Career Ramblings has done a great job building a community with their Career Development blog, as evidenced by the great comments and number of regular contributors. It's not hard to see why this blog is a favorite. Packed with great content and relevant topics, this blog covers all aspects of career development. If you're getting ready to graduate from college, Jane recently posted an article with some practical advice on dealing with dreaded college debt. What I especially like about the posts is that they are well-written, informative, entertaining and well-researched. I heard on NPR this morning that U.S. productivity was down for 2006. Many theories abound about the reasons and I wonder how much of it might pertain to job satisfaction. The more passionate someone is about their job and what they do, the more they seem to accomplish. With so many people dissatisfied with their jobs, it's really not surprising to me that productivity is down. Unfortunately, a trend in recent years has placed most Corporate American businesses at the mercy of the bottom line. Decisions are made solely to increase value to shareholders. While shareholders' value should be considered, other factors may be more important, and may, in the long run, prove to be more profitable. Factors such as employee appreciation and customer service play a major role in employee perception about a company. When employees are taken care of, they will take care of the customers. To assume that people should work their hardest just because they get a paycheck isn't going to cut it in today's world. Employees are no longer tied to one company until retirement. If things aren't going well somewhere, they simply move on. Deep down, everyone wants to feel important. Companies that recognize and reward employee performance will certainly reap the benefits to their bottom line. Take Google, for example. Recently voted best place to work in America by Fortune Magazine. While companies certainly don't have to provide free gourmet meals and spa amenities on site to increase job satisfaction, they can certainly let their employees know that they are appreciated and congratulate them for a job well done. And employees? If you are dissatisfied with your job, look for ways to make it better. Figure out what you really want to do, and go for it! Life is too short to be unhappy!

I felt compelled to post my thoughts today on work at home income opportunity get rich quick schemes. This goes hand in hand with career development for many people. Here is what I see happening:

Many people are unhappy with their jobs.
With rising housing costs, gas prices, and energy prices, many people are in debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and looking for answers, a way out.
The internet offers an opportunity to potentially make lots of money (all from the comforts of home).
Savvy marketers KNOW all of the above, and tailor their messages to people looking for a way out. They prey on people looking for answers, many people who can ill afford the overpriced products. Even I have fallen victim to some of the "opportunities" - because they sound so great! Who wouldn't like to live the easy life and make tons of money? I know I would!

What's lacking in the messages of most of the work at home income opportunity get rich quick schemes is that it takes a LOT of work and patience to build a profitable online business. The marketers creating the products, sales pages, etc. have no doubt spent lots of time and energy working on their own businesses.

And if you're new to the internet, there's a lot to learn. You need to understand how to build web pages, how to market your business, drive traffic, build content, etc.

Before buying into any hype, sit down and figure out exactly what it is you want to do. If it includes owning a piece of "virtual real estate" (term coined by John Reese), sit down and plan your strategy.

Don't expect to become a millionaire overnight, and expect to work on your business. What you'll discover is that the same basic business principles that apply to "offline" businesses still apply online. You still have to make a profit, fund your business, manage cash flow, market your business, hire employees, etc. Set goals for yourself to achieve your objectives, and stay focused on what you want.
